ABOUT 1900 Chateau Margaux

By Denny Wang

First the vintage

1900 was one of the best years for Red wines from Bordeaux in the previous century. The climate was such that it offered the best conditions for growing the perfect grapes to turn into wine.

About Chateau Margaux

There was an official classification of the greatest wines in Bordeaux in 1855. The top 5% were further grouped into five classes – called growths. So 1st growth is the best, followed by 2nd growth so on and so forth. Bare in mind that 5th growth doesn’t mean fifth class at all. Anyone who makes it onto any one of these five classes are already first class! Chateau Margaux is one of only 5 who was bestowed the elite honor of 1st growth.

About the 1900 Chateau Margaux

Although there were many excellent wines made by the best Chateaux of Bordeaux in 1900, Chateau Margaux came up on top. Some 95 years later, wine experts from all over the world elected ten greatest wines of the last century. The 1900 Chateau Margaux was on top of that list also.

How many bottles are still around?

Nobody knows for sure but the best guess is there are less than a dozen. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there is one in the Philippines, at YATS in Clark of course.

How much is it?

One million pesos and change.

Is it still drinkable?

Not only is it drinkable, it is so full of vigor that if blind folded, even a connoisseur may mistake it for a 30-year-old bottle and there is no shame at all in being fooled because this wine is known to be immortal.
